Frequently Asked Questions

Do you charge for structural surveys or estimates?

No — all consultations and written estimates are completely free, with no obligation to proceed.

Do I need a structural engineer before a knock-through?

Yes. A structural engineer is required to calculate the correct RSJ size, padstones, and load paths. If you don’t already have one, we can organise this for you as part of the service.

How long does a kitchen knock-through usually take?

Most knock-throughs take 3–7 days, depending on the size of the wall, whether it’s load-bearing, and whether a chimney breast is being removed. Making-good (plastering, skimming, etc.) follows shortly after.

Can I stay in my home while the work is being done?

Yes — most clients stay in their home throughout. We use dust protection, floor coverings, and temporary screens to minimise disruption, and we keep all access routes clean and safe.

How messy is a knock-through?

Honesty: it is dusty work, but we take strong measures to control it.
We use dust sheets, extraction where possible, and seal off working areas. At the end of each day, we tidy up so your home stays as comfortable as possible.

Will the house be supported while the wall is removed?

Absolutely. Before taking out any structural wall, we install temporary supports such as Acrow props and Strongboy attachments until the steel beam is fitted and signed off. Safety is the top priority.

Can you remove a chimney breast as part of the knock-through?

Yes — this is one of the most common requests. We safely remove chimney breasts and install the required supports to redistribute the load.
